How do I access the 4d2.org BBS?
There are several ways to access the BBS.
The simplest way for new users is to use the web interface at https://bbs.4d2.org, which has a built-in client window that will allow you connect via telnet. The web interface also allows you to anonymously browse (some of) our file collections and messages from inter-BBS networks like FidoNet. In order to access adult-oriented files or post to inter-BBS networks, you will need to connect normally, register an account and log in.
For the very best experience, we recommend that you install SyncTERM, set your screen size to 80x25 characters, and connect to bbs.4d2.org using telnet. However, you can also connect to the BBS using any ordinary telnet client. Once you've registered an account, you can also use your username and password to connect to bbs.4d2.org using SSH. Since BBSes are not particularly private spaces by design, there's very little advantage to using SSH unless your ISP blocks port 23.
If you choose to use your system's telnet or SSH, keep in mind that the BBS uses color ANSI text for graphical screens and menus, so whatever terminal you use will need to support this. Most modern Linux terminals do.
Those committed to doing things authentically can also dial in to the BBS the old fashioned way by calling +1 541 442 4422, or toll-free within the USA at 1-888-4-4D2ORG (1-888-443-2674). Two telephone lines are available. If you dial in using a VoIP connection, it may be necessary to lower your modem's data rate to 9600 or even 2400 bps. SyncTERM provides a good experience for modem users, though other serial communication programs like minicom also work well as long as you explicitly configure them for ANSI color.
